Based in Germany, Faber-Castell has been proudly perfecting their art supplies since 1761. They first released their Castell 9000 graphite pencils in 1905, meaning they’ve had well over a century to hone their outstanding quality, durability and variety.

They’re our go-to tool for sketching and drawing techniques such as hatching, cross-hatching, overhand grip, smudging and more.

These pencils are SV-bonded, meaning the full length of the lead is glued to the wood casing of the pencil. Faber-Castell pioneered this technique over 50 years ago to ensure their pencils are much harder to break and guaranteed to sharpen easily. They’re made with environmental stewardship in mind: the wood is sourced from sustainably managed forests and the coating is a water-based varnish. The pencils’ leads are smooth, never scratchy, made of finely ground graphite and clay.
